Free activities for young people

AMP (Arts, Media and Performing Arts) is a rolling programme with classes decided upon by local young people for the benefit of other youngsters in Waltham Forest. The different activities are rotated each term to keep our Youth Offer fresh and exciting.

Projects we have delivered in the past include (but not limited to):

Past AMP participants choreographed dance performances incorporating contemporary and street dance. The project led to a performance at St Paul’s Cathedral being the first youth dance troupe invited to perform secular music in a sacred place. Performing to an audience of over 100 people for the first time.

This performance paved the way for the group to deliver a fusion African, Caribbean dance for a Black History event which also encouraged audience participation.

The stop-animation workshops saw participants mould and sculpture objects, animals and people to create animated Claymation movies from start to finish. With the addition of sound, visual effects and post editing young people where were able to build a wide range of skills and experience. The workshop also provided a safe space for young people to discuss their interests and ideas and raise any issues affecting their lives with an optional one-to-one session with the resident youth worker.

The film making programme teaches filming, editing and production using up-to-date relevant tools such as DSLR cameras, lighting, Mac book laptops and software such as Imovie, Adobe Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.

The goal is to teach practical and social skills that make up the media industry in a free-flowing inclusive atmosphere. Young people can build confidence to use their newly enquired skills independently and with confidence beyond the sessions.

Many of our young people have expressed a lack of knowledge and access to provisions in order to develop media skills for a hobby or potential career so have found the AMP programs very beneficial.

“When I started I didn’t know how to use a video camera, and soon learnt what a green screen was, now I know how they do it in the movies” AMP participant, Aged 14

There is a great interest and passion for the media industry among young people, with many showing a keen interest in developing careers in Social Media.

Participants have access to state of the art Apple Mac equipment, industry relevant software and trained staff. Once projects are completed students have the opportunity to showcase their work on our website and perform both locally and nationally.

“I was able to learn how to write a script for a radio show and present it” AMP participant, aged 13
