We believe in the benefits of good health and wellbeing…

We recognise health and wellbeing is the bedrock that enables people to develop in all areas of their life, from education and employment to relationships and social networks. We believe in the power of sport and physical activity to bring people together as well as the wider associated benefits, from increased self-confidence to better educational attainment, improved physiological health to better relationships. Sport has, and always will be, a fundamental part of what we do.

Our plan is based on the UK Active Framework for opening gym and health and wellbeing facilities and Swim England for the opening of swimming pools during the period of “social distancing” following the full closure of the sector due to COVID-19. Our plan outlines our commitment to our staff and to you our customers to ensure all of our safety and the approach we will take in the ReOpening of Health and Wellbeing services.

Welcome Back! Essentials You Need to Know

  • If you are feeling ill or showing signs of any symptoms, you must not attend our centres and you must follow NHS guidance.
  • Please consider the safest way to travel to us during this time. Where distances allow we always recommend active travel and for you to make your journey to us part of your exercise by running, walking or cycling.
  • As part of Test and Trace we require that all of our activities are pre-booked and paid via our app, online or as part of an organised sports club prior to visiting us or via the NHS QR code available in our venues’ receptions. It is a requirement that all participants, visitors or staff (over the age 16 years) register each visit at our centres.
  • Face coverings are required in most indoor settings. Where possible and practical you should wear face coverings in our reception and circulatory areas and have to in our catering, retail spaces and when circulating in our hostels (unless you are exempt). You do not need to wear face coverings when exercising, engaging in sport or physical activity. We want to keep each other safe and our staff will be generally be wearing face coverings whilst circulating through our venues and we ask this of you.
  • We have increased our cleaning of our centres and have reviewed our procedures to ensure they meet the COVID 19 Public Health England COVID 19: Cleaning of non-healthcare settings guidance. You will see additional cleaning of shared surfaces and touchpoints throughout the day.
  • All of our activities spaces have maximum numbers of customers allocated.
  • We have implemented one-way systems (where possible) so we can maintain social distancing in our centres.
  • Hand sanitiser and cleaning materials are located at various locations around our centres for you to use.
  • All of our teams have received training in our new ways of working, ensuring your safety and the safety of everyone.

Welcoming you back… What can you initially expect?

  • Pre Booking of all Activities: We will initially manage all your bookings and services through our Health and Wellbeing app. You can of course still call or email us. You will need to download the app and book your activity sessions through it please. Not everyone will be able to use the app and we will not be able to resolve everything you need from us through it so if you do not have access to the app or do having difficulties using it please either talk to a member of our team, call or email us at enquiries@ymcaspg.org
  • Test & Trace: Test and Trace requirements have been updated so that all users (including visitors and staff) of the indoor facilities over the age of 16 years have to either book each activity on our app, register at reception or scan in using your mobile phone on the NHS Test & Trace QR code upon each visit. QR codes are displayed in the reception areas.
  • Let’s Face it: Face coverings are required in most indoor settings. Where possible and practical you should wear face coverings in our reception and circulatory areas and have to in our catering, retail spaces and when circulating in our hostels (unless you are exempt).   • We are going Cashless: Cash gets dirty and the virus loves living on it so we will not be accepting cash for payment for any of our services, so please do not bring it. All payments are through contactless or through our Health and Wellbeing app.
  • Reception Screens: We will ensure sure your safety and maintain social distancing at receptions through screens and marking out safe spaces in yellow floor markings.
  • Floor Markings: We will reduce queues through the pre-booking of our services through our Health and Wellbeing app. We will manage the circulation of our staff and customers through marking our floors with 2m spacing markings and if necessary outside the entrance(s).
  • Support for you: We know coming back will be daunting and we will ensure you are welcomed back into our facilities and greeted by a friendly familiar face who will be there to guide you back. We will display appropriate guidance and notices for you and set out what you can expect from us. Access into some activity areas will be managed through the use of turnstiles/gates and through pre booked sessions.
  • Lavatories: Our toilets will be available for use and will be regularly cleaned but we will need your support to keep them as clean as possible. Extra care/signposting will be provided in them to remind us all to maintain good hygiene and handwashing with social distancing whilst in these areas.
  • Be gym or sport ready/changing rooms: Changing facilities, showers, saunas and lockers are located in small-enclosed spaces and will not be available for use initially. We will prioritise the return and use of these areas to customers and service users from Step 3 (earliest 17th May) as long as hygiene and social distancing can be maintained or when the guidance is changed. In general, our changing rooms are not available; however, if you have a disability you may need them for accessibility reasons. If you do please let us know in advance and email us at enquiries@ymcaspg.org or contact us at your local centre directly.

Cafés/Restaurants:

Our cafés and restaurants will re-open initially by providing only limited outdoor takeaway service (where applicable). We anticipate a return of indoor seated catering from Step 4 (earliest 20th June) as social distancing allows. We will of course operate under any guidelines issued by Public Health England or other national health authorities.

  • Additional signs will be put up around cleanliness and social distancing.
  • Vending machines will remain in use but will be cleaned regularly.
  • Government Guidance for food businesses on COVID-19 will be followed.

Let’s keep safe, clean and hygienic

  • Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning: We have rigorous cleaning procedures and have updated our cleaning protocols throughout our facilities to take into account Government and Sector guidance and standards.
  • Touchpoints: All of our staff carry out regular cleaning of high-contact ‘touch points’ throughout the centre.
  • Over to you: We need you to maintain good hygiene and clean/wipe down any equipment that you have used whist using our facilities.
  • On hand: Hand sanitisers and or wipes are available throughout the centre from the hand sanitiser stations provided and if one is not readily available one of our friendly and familiar faces will be there to direct you to where you can clean your hands.
  • Gloves: Gloves are not mandatory as the World Health Organisation (WHO) advice is that it is preferable not to wear gloves but to regularly wash your hands. If you normally wear gloves to the gym and that is what you are comfortable with then continue to do so. Just remember not to drop them or leave them because if you do we will bag and bin anything left at the end of each session. We will not be keeping or returning lost property – sorry we just have to keep us all safe.
  • All change: We will regularly deep clean our facilities and activity areas. This will include 15 minutes change over periods of time between group indoor exercise classes/activity sessions and where we will temporarily close the facility or parts of the facility.
  • In the event of: If there is a COVID-19 case in our centre, we will immediately follow the Public Health Guidance – COVID-19 Cleaning in non-healthcare settings to get all of the necessary cleaning done. We will only resume as soon as it is safe to do so. If there is a case in our centre that could have affected you Test & Trace will contact you directly. We will forward your details to Test & Trace as part of the requirement to register all participants, visitors or staff.

Activity Specific Guidance Activity Spaces:

Gyms:

  • UK Active guidance states that our safe capacities of usage have to be reduced to ensure social distancing. Our maximum gym capacity will be based on 3msq per person. We will, through the use of our Health and Wellbeing App, reduce the number of available spaces to book into a gym session. This means things will not be the same when you first come back to using the gym. You will need to pre-book your session and turn up ‘ready to go’ and your time in the gym will be limited. Not all of the gym equipment may be available if we cannot maintain 2sq social distancing in the gym, some equipment may be moved or in another room – your normal workout flow and order of use of equipment may need to change.
  • Only equipment in our gyms that is 2m apart will be available for use. We will achieve this in a number of ways either via moving equipment or marking every other piece of equipment in the gym out of order (to facilitate social distancing). This will of course reduce the amount of equipment available and therefore the amount of people that can use the gym at any one time.
  • As with the circulatory areas we will floor mark at 2m spaces to encourage social distancing.
  • We will not have gym instructors as readily available in the normal way and one-to-one training, programme reassessments, nutritional, training advice and personal training will need to be pre booked through the Health and Wellbeing app and at reception. You will also be able to book online consultations with our fitness instructors and personal trainers through Zoom. There will always be a member of staff around to support you during your session and welcome you into to the centre.
  • We will need you our customers to clean/wipe down the ‘touch points of equipment’, things like the upholstery, pin selectors, handles, bars, weight discs or dumbbells. Any gym equipment you touch should be cleaned after use. This is critical for the safety and ongoing use of our gym activity spaces – we will provide sanitising spray and cloths/wipes for you to do this. This is in addition to our own comprehensive cleaning schedule where we will continue to clean the area regularly.
  • You will need to take extra care to ensure social distancing and hygiene in the free weights areas and we will place additional signage in these areas to remind you of the importance of this and please do not bring ’sweat towels’ onto the gym floor/into the studio.
  • Personal training sessions and health consultation will continue as long as social distancing is in place.
  • Please do not bring ’sweat towels’ into the gym.
  • We have changed some of the activity spaces in our centres to place gym equipment in (e.g. in the sports hall, studio or outdoors) to reduce the number of people gathering in one activity area.
  • Pre booking through our app is used to manage occupancy levels and to avoid overcrowding. Each activity session is a maximum of 60 minutes long. Indoor exercise classes have 15 minutes at the end to allow for cleaning and changeover.
  • You can book up to two gym sessions per day which will include back-to-back sessions where there is availability; this is to be done via our app.
  • You can book your gym sessions up-to 7-days in advance.
  • You can book up to 14 activity sessions in any 7-day period.
  • You can mix and match your activities such as gym and/or classes.
  • Please come to our gym ready and be prepared to shower and change at home. In general, our changing rooms are not available, however, you may need them for accessibility reasons. If you do please let us know in advance and email us at enquiries@ymcaspg.org or contact us at your local centre directly.
  • Please do not bring your valuables, our lockers will not be available.
  • Please do not to bring your own towels, we will provide you with cleaning spays and disposable paper roll and wipes.
  • Please bring your own water bottle. Our water fountains are only set up to fill water bottles, not directly drinking from.
  • We are maximising passive ventilation in our gyms through opening windows and doors. In addition to this, we utilise mechanical air through fans and vents and additional floor based fans to circulate and extract air. Where air conditioning is available it is set to extract air as each system allows to ensure the replacement of fresh air wherever possible.
  • Please clean equipment before and after each use. Sanitisation stations are located around the gym for you and our team to use.
  • Our team clean equipment on a regular basis, including the disinfection of fitness suite and studios.
  • New member gym inductions, our Get Started programme will be provided through a combination of online and appointment only sessions.
  • Gym access to our junior gym (11-13 year olds) customers is not available initially but will be reintroduced at a later date. In the meantime, 14+ years gym sessions will be available and we will offer young person specific gym sessions where a gym instructor is present from Step 3 (earliest 17h May) this will need to bookable in advance via our app.
  • Personal Training is available and subject to social distancing guidelines. Pre booking of all personal training is required to ensure our gyms remain within maximum numbers.

Activity Spaces:

Studios/Indoor Group Exercise Classes:

  • UK Active guidance states that our safe capacities of usage have to be reduced to ensure social distancing. Our maximum studio capacity will be based on 3msq per person. Indoor group exercise classes will resume from Step 3 (earliest 17th May).
  • We will through the use of our Health and Wellbeing App to reduce the number of available spaces to book onto a class and group activity session. This means things will not be the same when you first come back to our classes.
  • You will need to pre-book your class and turn up ‘ready to go’.
  • We will not be able to provide all of our classes if we cannot maintain 2m social distancing in the studios.
  • Some of our classes may be moved into another room, outside or provided virtually through Zoom live streaming – your normal class timetable will be changed along with how many other people you exercise with together.
  • As with the gym areas we will floor mark at 2m spaces to encourage social distancing spacing between participants monitored by the instructor throughout the class.
  • Unfortunately, nothing can be passed to/from the instructor to you– including safekeeping personal items, water bottles, keys, mobile phones etc. We will through floor markings provide a ‘safe space’ for our class instructors.
  • The length of your class will be reduced and there will be a minimum of a 15-minute window in between classes so that we can all clean the studio and maintain social distancing between groups entering and leaving the studios so regrettably no ‘waiting around’ and socialising in groups in the indoor studios or circulatory areas.
  • As with the gym we really will need you to clean any studio equipment you use by cleaning/wiping down the ‘touch points of equipment’ things like the studio bars, weight discs or dumbbells.
  • We will not be providing mats so you will need to bring your own and we will remove some pieces of studio equipment like resistance bands. This is critical for the safety and ongoing use of our studios activity spaces – we will provide sanitising spray and cloths/wipes for you to do this. This is in addition to our own comprehensive cleaning schedule where we will continue to clean the area.
  • Please do not bring ’sweat towels’ into the studio. • You will need to book Group Exercises classes in advance via our app.
  • You can book up to two classes per day which includes back-to-back classes where there is availability.

  • Where classes involve shared equipment, (e.g. body pump or circuit training) we have adapted the class and you will need to clean the equipment after use.
  • You will need to bring your own yoga mats.

Activity Spaces:

Outdoor Group Exercise Classes

  • Outdoor Group exercise classes will resume (where available) from Step 1 29th March.
  • Outdoor Group exercise classes will require social distancing of 2m as above.
  • You will need to book outdoor Group Exercises classes in advance via our app.
  • You can book up to two classes per day which includes back-to-back classes where there is availability.
  • You can book your classes up-to 7-days in advance.
  • You can book up to 14 classes in any 7-day period.
  • You can mix and match your activities, classes and/or gym.
  • We will not be providing mats so you will need to bring your own. We will provide sanitising spray and cloths/wipes for you to wipe down equipment (such as studio cycles). This is in addition to our own comprehensive cleaning schedule where we will continue to clean the equipment after each outdoor class.

Some sports coaching, participation, training or competitive matches will be altered to through the requirement to maintain social distancing. We will be following sports specific guidance from the relevant National Sports Governing Body (NGB’s) where these are activities are being provided.
  • As with the above guidance all of the sports activity spaces will follow the same cleaning requirements. Particular attention will be needed in the use of sports equipment. We will not be initially be providing shared sports equipment to rent or use, you will have to bring your own. As with the above activity areas you will need to and turn up ‘ready to play’. Access to sports changing facilities for clubs will be reviewed along with general access to changing facilities at a later date and as social distancing requirements change.
  • Unfortunately, nothing can be passed to/from the coach to you– including safekeeping of personal items, water bottles, keys, mobile phones, bibs etc.
  • Just like in the gym or studio please do not bring ’sweat towels’.
  • Further sport guidance will be updated when available.

Activity Spaces: Outdoor Fitness/Courts/Pitches

  • Social distancing and cleanliness will be promoted by the instructor(s) at the beginning and throughout the outdoor activity session.
  • Outdoor sports courts, sports halls and pitches will be opened. However, for any activity where social distancing is not possible or the sports activity requires contact or large groups participating together, these facilities/activities will remain closed/not played. Some sports coaching, participation, training or competitive matches will be altered to through the requirement to maintain social distancing.   • All court bookings must be pre-booked in advance via our app;
  • Bookings are for a maximum of 50 minutes. This will allow 10 minutes after the booking for changeover;
  • You will be required to bring your own sports equipment (e.g. racquets, balls, shuttlecocks);

Tennis Courts

  • We are following the recommended guidance from the Lawn Tennis Association, which can be found below. Please ensure you familiarise yourself with this information prior to booking online and visiting the courts:
  • We ask that you only handle your own rackets and (marked) tennis balls;
  • Please avoid changing ends or change at opposite sides of the net;
  • You need to book and pay via our app prior to attending your session. No bookings will be taken at the centre for casual pay and play usage, bookings and payments can only be made via the app;
  • Booking slots are 60-minutes, which includes 50-minutes playtime with a 10-minute change period. There is a 10-minute buffer period between bookings and you will be asked to wait in your car until the start of your session;
