A lot has changed since our gyms were first forced to close in March 2020. Some people have been smashing their lockdown fitness goals; turning into runners by taking on their first 5k, ordering weights and creating their very own home gyms, or joining in our online fitness classes. Others have been taking a well-deserved rest from high-impact workouts, instead opting for gentle walks to stay active.
The one thing that hasn’t changed is that physical activity, in any form, can alleviate stress. Exercise is proven to increase your brain’s production of endorphins, which are the “feel-good” hormones that fight stress, and are responsible for the sense of well-being and euphoria that many people experience after exercise.
Whilst some people are desperate to smash a workout in one of our gyms, for others the thought of returning can cause anxiety and stress. We want to make the transition back to the gym as stress-free as possible. That being said, if you aren’t feeling comfortable enough to return to our centres in person, don’t worry! We will still be running our online classes throughout this period and in the future so that you can be active safely at home or when you come back to your centre.
Whether you choose to return to the gym immediately or wait a little longer, here are some things to consider for a successful and stress-free return to the gym.
- Don’t go too hard too soon:
Although you may be keen to get back into your previous routine, keep in mind that you probably haven’t used proper gym equipment and heavy weights for a long time. Therefore, you will have to build your strength back up gradually. There is no point in pushing your body too far too soon, as you will risk injuries and might end up exhausting yourself.
Your body will need time to re-adjust, so start off by using lower weights, reducing the reps and planning for more rest time between sets.
- Enjoy it as much as possible:
Returning to our gyms should be a fun and exciting experience, so, remember to enjoy it — no matter how heavy you’re lifting.
Like anything, so long as you enjoy doing it, you’ll want to do more of it. So, whatever makes you enjoy the gym most: setting goals, listening to podcasts/music, or doing your favourite lifts again, just try to have a little bit of fun in the gym when you go back.
- Try not to feel intimidated:
For some, all the different machines and weights will be overwhelming when you’ve just gotten used to home-workouts again.
So, just tell yourself that you only have to turn up: that once you go, you’ll be able to figure out what exercises you would like to do. If you go and you don’t feel like lifting anything or if you think it’s too busy, just go home — don’t put any pressure on yourself to go straight back into your old routine. Eventually you’ll be back to your old routine and habits, so just have a bit of patience and keep trying little bits at a time.
If you feel you need that extra motivation, professional knowledge and friendly encouragement to help you achieve your health & fitness goal then our team will be happy to help with any questions you may have with our Get Started programme. Where you can get a tailored workout programme. These can be booked via our app or onsite from the 12th of April.
If you just go to the gym, you have won. You have achieved that goal. If you do a good workout, even better. This is a great way to get you inside the gym and that is the first step to easing yourself back into exercising.
- Be mindful of our safety measures:
We are committed to providing you with a safe place to train, and therefore, we have implemented several safety measures. Across all our Health and Wellbeing centres, we have rearranged the equipment and marked out areas so you can keep a safe distance whilst training. In addition to cleaning the gyms throughout the day, we will also be carrying out a deep clean whilst our centres are closed and providing multiple sanitising stations in all our gyms so you can wipe down equipment before and after use.
If you feel comfortable to visit us, you can book a slot via our app. If you aren’t able to visit us in person, we will be continuing to deliver our online classes. You can stay active from home with our online class held by our fabulous instructors.
