They not only provide a fantastic activity for children and young people but make an amazing impact in the community and provide a safe space for vulnerable young people with fantastic outcomes both in Karate success and personal development.
Crime Diversion Project for Family Project of the Year
The Crime Diversion Project, runs at Hayes, and supports young people facing immense challenges and barriers to reaching their goals. The young people we support are largely involved in complex serious violence, crime, gang affiliation and other challenges. Referred by the Ealing Youth Justice Service, we support the young people, their families, schools, social workers and statutory services to provide holistic and impactful support over 1-3 years.
Martin Bushaway for Young Campaigner of the Year
He is currently making a fantastic impact campaigning on behalf of YMCA St Paul’s Group with Merton Citizens. Martin has been campaigning for an empathy-first approach for frontline staff working with vulnerable people facing homelessness, after experiencing his own negative experience and hearing many more from our residents. He has been instrumental in getting council leaders to agree to working with YMCA residents to create a training course for support staff addressing how to speak to young people when they are facing the prospect of being homeless.
YMCA St Paul’s group ERGs for the Diversity Award
Across the organisation the People and Culture Team have been building on our good foundations with a broad range of activities and training that have inspired conversations and encouraged our staff in continuing to build a strong culture of inclusion and appreciation. The Employee Resource Groups are staff led groups focusing on Disability, LGBTQIA+, Race and Women. These groups work to create a supportive space for sharing and work to raise awareness of issues and influence policy across the organisation.
