Representing Khalsa Karate, the karate club at YMCA Hawker in Kingston, at the EKF National English Championships this weekend was Fran Hardcastle, Sophie Santillo and Alex James.
Hundreds of competitors attended the competitions, which took place in Sheffield.
Alex James was up first of the three girls, and after five rounds she reached the final. Satinder Sehra, Alex’s coach at Khalsa Karate, said:
“Alex was amazing all day and only just got beaten in the final by a very good opponent. However, she took home a well-deserved silver medal”.
Next up was Sophie Santillo who did four rounds and took home the club’s first gold medal of the day.
Fran Hardcastle, who one month ago took part in the European Championships in Switzerland, competed on Sunday 19th April. Unfortunately she lost in the semi-final against a very good opponent, however she still took home a bronze medal.
Last up was Sophie again who entered the Seniors group against some very tough opponents. She had four rounds and won her second gold of the weekend.
Satinder said: “The weekend was excellent and we have a lot to be happy about, as well as some areas to improve on. The quality of opponents is always very high and I am proud that with three competitors we came back with two golds, one silver and one bronze. So well done to the girls, and thanks to all my team and the YMCA for all their continued support!”.
