A fantastic and commited volunteer, here is Carolyn’s story.
How did you first get involved with YMCA Wimbledon, and what inspired you to volunteer?
I started volunteering with YMCA Wimbledon in 2010. Before that I was already a member of the gym and was getting to know the chaplaincy team there. I had experience in chaplaincy and pastoral care and I was invited to volunteer and join the team but with a particular emphasis on the fitness side of the association. I loved the idea of serving my local community and to have pastoral provision for those who exercise at the YMCA. People go to gyms for more reasons than fitness and to have someone who can be a listening ear for members is a significant service to offer. The connection between mind, body and spirit is so important in life, and for the work of the YMCA. It felt like the YMCA could offer holistic care not found in many other fitness centres, and that excited me.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience from your time volunteering?
I have run a course for women called Wellsprings and each time I run it there is a wonderful sense of connection with the women who attend. We explore topics such as Rest & Relaxation, Worry & Anxiety, Beauty & Self Esteem and we allow space for people to talk, to be heard, and to bring a spiritual perspective into these issues which we all face. Every time I am blown away by the honesty and vulnerability of the women, and how much we connect with each other. They are truly precious times.
What has volunteering at YMCA Wimbledon taught you or brought to your life?
It has taught me patience as sometimes it’s just about showing up week in week out, being a positive presence, sometimes wondering if you’re making a difference, but trusting that often that is enough. Most of my role is simply being available and being a listening ear and I’ve discovered that in itself is valuable.
It has also brought me into a new community. I‘ve seen how relationships run deep amongst the members and so often the powerful points of connection are over a coffee after a workout as I see friendships strengthened and new people welcomed.
How do you feel about being part of the YMCA Wimbledon community, especially as we celebrate 150 years?
It is an honour and privilege to serve at the YMCA Wimbledon. I really believe that it has something unique to offer to our locality. There has always been a strong emphasis on community and belonging, and I see it in gym members who have been friends for decades. It may be fitness that prompts people to join a gym but it is often friendship that keeps them there. There is much to celebrate in the YMCA Wimbledon community.
What message would you like to share with others who are considering volunteering?
I would encourage anyone who is considering volunteering to give it a go. Take time to explore the different areas of volunteering and find the right fit for you. It is really rewarding, and it is a great community to be part of.
