A Guide for Mindful Movers

Reformer Pilates has surged in popularity, and for good reason. It’s a powerful method for building strength, improving posture, and enhancing overall movement quality. But with so many studios popping up, how do you choose one that is truly aligned with the authentic Pilates method and meets your personal needs?
Here’s what to look for when choosing a Reformer Pilates studio that supports your body, your goals, and your wellbeing.

1. Qualified Instructors Matter… A Lot

True Pilates training is rigorous. It takes hundreds of hours of study, practice, and mentorship to become a fully qualified Pilates instructor. Unfortunately, there are “reformer-only” certifications that are quick, inexpensive, and lack depth. These may be fine for fitness-style classes, but they don’t equip instructors to teach the full method or work safely with injuries or special conditions.
Look for studios where all instructors hold recognised Pilates qualifications—ideally from reputable bodies like Balanced Body, Alan Herdman, Polestar, Body Control Pilates, BASI or STOTT. These instructors understand anatomy, alignment, and how to tailor movement to individual needs.

2. Smaller Studios = More Attention

A studio with no more than 10 reformer beds is ideal. Smaller class sizes mean more individual attention, better cueing, and a safer, more supportive environment. You’ll be seen, corrected, and guided – rather than lost in the crowd.

3. Method Over Burn

If a studio’s marketing is all about “burn,” “sweat,” or “bootcamp vibes,” it may not be the right fit if you’re looking for true Pilates. The Pilates method is about alignment, breath, control, and mind-body connection. It’s not just a workout, it’s a movement system designed to help you move better in life.
Choose a studio that emphasises optimum movement, posture, and mindful practice over calorie burn or intensity.

4. Community Feel & Accountability

The best studios foster a sense of community. You’ll feel welcomed, supported, and motivated to show up regularly. That sense of belonging can be a game-changer for consistency and progress.
Ask yourself: Do I feel comfortable here? Do I want to come back? If the answer is yes, you’ve likely found a good fit.

5. Support for Injuries or Special Conditions

If you’re injured, deconditioned, or have restricted movement, it’s essential that your instructor is qualified to work with these issues. A well-trained Pilates instructor can modify exercises, offer alternatives, and guide you safely.
In these cases, consider starting with 1:1 sessions or small therapeutic group classes before joining a general group class.

6. Introductory Sessions Are a Must

A good studio will offer an intro to Reformer Pilates – either as a private session or a beginner-friendly class. This helps you learn the equipment, understand the basic principles, and build confidence before jumping into a regular class.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right Reformer Pilates studio isn’t just about convenience or cost – it’s about finding a space that honours the method, supports your body, and helps you grow. When you find that studio, you’ll not only move better, you’ll feel better, too.
