Starting counselling can feel daunting, especially if you’re unsure what the first session will involve. Understanding what to expect can help ease nerves and make taking that first step feels more manageable. Here’s what typically happens when you begin counselling with Release Counselling.
How the First Session Works
Your first counselling appointment is a chance to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it. There’s no pressure to share everything at once, you set the pace.
Your counsellor may ask some gentle questions to help understand your experiences, current challenges, and goals. This session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of whether the counselling relationship feels right for you.
Confidentiality Explained
Confidentiality is a core part of counselling. What you share in sessions remains private, creating a safe space to speak openly and honestly.
At Release Counselling, confidentiality is respected in line with professional guidelines. There are only rare exceptions, such as serious risk of harm and your counsellor will explain these clearly at the beginning so you understand how your information is protected.
Session Length and Frequency
Counselling sessions at Release Counselling last 50 minutes and usually take place once a week.
Some people attend counselling for a short period, such as six weeks, while others choose longer-term support. Your needs will be reviewed regularly with your counsellor, allowing the work to progress at a pace that feels right for you.
Taking the First Step
It’s completely normal to feel uncertain before starting counselling. Many people worry about saying the “right” thing, feeling judged, or not knowing where to begin.
Counselling isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about having a space to explore, reflect, and understand yourself better. Taking the first step is often the hardest part, but it can also be the start of meaningful change.
If you feel ready to explore counselling, Release Counselling offers professional, affordable, and confidential support — both locally and online.
You can Self-refer online at a time that suits you, knowing support is there when you’re ready.
