Bathing Water Status Awarded to the Thames at YMCA Hawker

Bathing Water Status Awarded to the Thames at YMCA Hawker

YMCA St Paul’s Group is proud to celebrate the announcement that the stretch of the River Thames beside the YMCA Hawker Centre has been officially designated as a Bathing Water Site, a landmark achievement for the local community, outdoor swimmers, and environmental advocates.

This decision recognises years of collective effort by residents, campaigners, councillors and community partners, and marks an important step in improving water quality, environmental standards, and safe river access across Kingston and Ham.

A Milestone for Community Health and Wellbeing

YMCA Hawker has long been a champion of outdoor activity and river-based recreation. The centre already serves as a launch point for Stand Up Paddleboarding and is the nominated toilet and support facility for open water swimming activities, reinforcing its commitment to safe and enjoyable use of the river water swimming activities.

YMCA St Paul’s Group also provided formal written support during the consultation, recognising the profound community value of protecting and enhancing this muchloved stretch of river.

Statement from Richard James, Chief Executive Officer, YMCA St Paul’s Group

“YMCA St Paul’s Group warmly welcomes this historic decision to grant Bathing Water Status to the stretch of the River Thames beside the YMCA Hawker Centre. As a charity committed to health, wellbeing and community life, we fully support efforts to protect and improve the water quality of this much loved part of the river. This designation recognises the area’s importance to local swimmers, families and outdoor enthusiasts, and we are proud to play our part — including providing facilities for openwater swimming and championing safe access to the river for all.”

The YMCA Hawker Centre is a popular local asset, offering fitness, community cafe, soft play, children’s activities, and riverside outdoor sport. The Bathing Water designation strengthens Hawker’s role as a hub for safe, inclusive and active living.
