Inspirational gym member Lorraine

Lorraine is one of our members and is an inspiration to us. Here is her story:

How did you first become involved with YMCA Wimbledon, and what initially drew you to our gym?

I have been attending the Wimbledon YMCA for the past 23 years.  Prior to this, I had been attending a summer playscheme with my young son, which also provided a yoga class for parents.  The Yoga Instructor worked some evenings at the Wimbledon YMCA, so I subsequently joined her classes.

Since joining the YMCA, I have participated in various classes there on a regular basis, as well as attending Yoga sessions.

What has kept you coming back over the years, and what do you enjoy most about being a part of the YMCA Wimbledon community?

During my 23 years, I have continued attending the YMCA on a regular basis, due to feeling so comfortable in the environment. I enjoy the various exercise classes I attend and have developed my physical skills and technique to a level that I am quite proud of.  I am much more mentally alert and my concentration span has significantly improved. In addition to this, I have developed a good relationship with both my colleagues and staff members.

How has your relationship with YMCA Wimbledon influenced your personal fitness journey or overall well-being?

I have been very impressed with the high level of enthusiasm and competence of the instructors who work with both me and the other members during class sessions.

This has greatly influenced my belief and enthusiasm over a period of time in a positive manner, around my physical and personal fitness level and overall well-being.

What do you value most about the community and friendships you’ve built at YMCA Wimbledon?

I am very grateful for the positive and friendly interactions that I have been able to be involved with in the community.  Also, the positive and valuable friendships that I have developed with various individuals, which continue to grow.

As we celebrate 150 years, what do you think makes YMCA Wimbledon special, and what are your hopes for its future?

I am of the view that the Wimbledon YMCA is a very special and valuable service. I am very impressed with the new gym and group exercise classes that are being provided to the community.   They also provide short term, supported housing accommodation for the community and assist individuals with preparing for job opportunities. In addition, they provide an affordable counselling service, undertaken by trained professionals who offer individuals regular time and space to talk through any difficulties they may be experiencing, that impact on day to day life.

I believe that both I and most members greatly appreciate the social aspects and the high-quality service that the YMCA provides to the community. I would love to see this continue to grow and develop in the long term.
