Throughout every department of YMCA St Paul’s Group, we take an active, tailored approach to volunteering.
When people offer their time, we sit down with each individual to establish what they like doing, where they’re skills lie at and who they want to help.
People volunteer with YMCA St Paul’s Group for many reasons. Perhaps they are between jobs and want to keep busy while they look for another, perhaps they want to add some valuable work experience to their CV or perhaps they simply have some spare time and want to help others.
Some come to us with very little idea of how diverse we are, however, we try and make sure that all volunteers end up in a role that absolutely fits them.
The feedback our volunteers give speaks for itself, really: Purpose, personal fulfilment, experience, sense of giving, skills development, training, new friends, learning, understanding and giving back to the community are some of the things volunteers get back from offering a some of their time and expertise.
Whatever the reason, our volunteers are part of a valued team who work across most of our departments. Volunteer roles include:
- Cafe Assistants
- Gym Instructors
- Play Workers
- Committee Members
- YMCA Residents Activities
- Youth Workers
- Area Committee Members
The above list isn’t exclusive – if you have skills or experience in other fields and would like to volunteer, we will try and find a suitable option for you.
Volunteers receive induction training and are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check. Travel expenses are reimbursed and meals are provided while on duty. After a qualifying period and depending on hours worked, volunteers may also use Health and Wellbeing facilities and Hampton Pool free of charge.

“I am inspired by the time and commitment that our volunteers put into the young people and communities that we serve. The range of skills, experience and energy they bring helps transform lives whether that be through providing support in the corporate office or direct with people that we serve.
If you are thinking about becoming a YMCA volunteer then can I say thank you for considering becoming part of an association of people committed to seeing people find life in all its fullness” Richard James, CEO.
