YMCA South Ealing Through the Years

YMCA South Ealing has a rich history going back over 150 years.

South Ealing Founded

YMCA began in the West of London when thirteen young men met in Grove Road, Ealing for a prayer group. Similar to the establishment of George Williams’ founding group, they came together with a similar interest in religion, community and personal development.

West London Struggling

Without the necessary support, South Ealing struggled in its formative years. It endeavoured to stay open but was nearly abandoned due to a debt of £13 which could not be repaid. It might not seem like much but with inflation this would be equivalent to almost £2000 today.

Rebuilding the Community

Following World War Two, the YMCA helped the community to heal. By offering housing, sports and education for the local residents, they were able to have a fresh start and even more importantly, a place they could find comfort and restoration in.

Joining the Rest

South Ealing merged with the other YMCAs in Southwest and East London forming the St Paul’s Group, a nod to the YMCA’s origins of George Williams’ bible study, held in the churchyard, that started it all. A later edition to the group, the centre contributes further services to Greater London.
